Boating Safety Course – Boat Massachusetts

Marine Tech lecture being given by a teacherBHCC is offering the Boat Massachusetts course in partnership with the Massachusetts Environmental Police. This is a recognized safety training that meets the National Boating Education Standards and is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.

Marine Technician Program

Launch your career in the growing marine industry with Bunker Hill Community College's Marine Technician Program, offered in partnership with the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association (MMTA) and Mercury Marine University.

Designed to meet the workforce needs of Massachusetts' boating industry, this program combines classroom instruction with hands-on training to prepare students for entry-level employment as marine technicians.

Marine technicians earn an average annual salary of $45,000–$50,000, with strong opportunities for career growth throughout the state.

Program Options

Level 1: Introduction to Marine Engines and Systems

The 10-week Level 1 program is designed for entry-level participants with little or no experience in the marine industry who are interested in starting a career and are ready to enter the workforce upon successful completion of the program.

Students receive instruction in:

  • ABYC Fundamentals of Marine Service Technology
  • Mercury Marine Systems Basics
  • Marine shop safety and best practices
  • Electrical systems and installation
  • Internal combustion theory
  • Inboard and outboard engine maintenance
  • Engine troubleshooting
  • Drive systems
  • Marine plumbing and HVAC
  • Fiberglass basics
  • Marine construction concepts
  • Customer service principles

In addition to technical training, students receive:

  • Career counseling
  • Mentorship
  • Tutoring
  • Hands-on training
  • Job placement assistance

End Date: Wednesday, November 18, 2026
Days: Tuesday & Wednesday
Time: 6:00–9:00 p.m.

Level 2: Engines, Systems & Maintenance

The Level 2 course is designed for students with previous marine and/or mechanical experience who are interested in a more advanced, workshop-oriented learning experience.

Please note: Level 2 does not include any additional licensing or credentials.

Students receive hands-on instruction in:

  • Internal combustion theory
  • Spark and compression testing
  • Gas and diesel fuel sampling and identification
  • Engine diagnostics
  • Gear and lube oil changes
  • Belt and filter replacement
  • Trailer maintenance
  • Hub and bearing replacement
  • Trailer connection and disconnection procedures
  • HVAC troubleshooting
  • Marine water pumps and pump systems
  • AC/DC electrical systems
  • Multimeter operation

Start Date: September 28
End Date: November 2
The course will run Monday and Thursday night
Time: 6:00–9:00 p.m.
Length: The course is 5-weeks long.

Location

Classes are held in person at BHCC's Charlestown Campus.

Instruction includes the ABYC Fundamentals of Marine Service Technology curriculum and Mercury University Systems Basics training.

Scholarship Opportunity

Students enrolling in Level 1 are encouraged to apply for the William Armstrong Scholarship through the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association (MMTA).

Eligible Massachusetts residents may receive awards of up to $1,500 toward education and training in the recreational marine industry.

Admission Requirements

Applicants should:
