BHCC Receives State Grant to Launch Inclusive Postsecondary Education Program

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) has received a Massachusetts Inclusive Postsecondary Education (MAIPSE) Implementation Grant to launch a new program that expands access to higher education. MAIPSE, a statewide initiative administered by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, is designed to create inclusive college experiences and improve educational, employment, and community participation outcomes for individuals age 18 and older who have significant intellectual or developmental disabilities or severe autism spectrum disorder.

Beginning in fall 2026, BHCC's MAIPSE program will enroll its first cohort of students from partner school districts. Participants will take credit and noncredit courses alongside their peers, receive individualized academic and career planning support, and engage in campus life through engagement in clubs, events, peer mentoring, and other student activities. BHCC aims to serve 12-15 students during its first three years while building pathways to employment, independence, and continued education.

"MAIPSE is about creating meaningful opportunities for students to experience all that college offers while preparing for their futures," said Jamie Luthy, Senior Special Program Coordinator for BHCC's MAIPSE program. "We're excited to welcome our first students and to work with families, school districts, and community partners to build an inclusive program that supports academic growth, career exploration, social connection, and long-term success."

Through partnerships with local school districts, employers, community organizations, and agencies, BHCC will provide students with access to academic supports, career development resources, peer mentoring, and opportunities for integrated employment. College leaders view the grant as an important step toward strengthening inclusive higher education opportunities across the region and ensuring that more students with disabilities can pursue their educational and career goals in a supportive campus environment.
