BHCC Celebrates First Literacy Scholars at Annual Scholarship Ceremony

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) President Dr. Pam Eddinger joined educators, community leaders, and scholarship recipients at the 37th Annual First Literacy Scholarship Ceremony on September 2 at The Great Hall in Boston.

Hosted by the City of Boston Worker Empowerment Cabinet, the event honored 20 adult learners from across Massachusetts who were awarded First Literacy Scholarships for the 2026-2027 academic year. Since 1990, First Literacy has awarded nearly 700 scholarships to adult learners pursuing higher education and workforce training opportunities.

This year, eight First Literacy scholars will attend BHCC, underscoring the college's longstanding commitment to educational access and student success. The ceremony celebrated learners whose determination, academic achievement, and perseverance helped them overcome significant challenges as they pursued their educational goals. 

“Adult learners bring extraordinary life experience, perseverance, and purpose to the classroom. These scholarships open doors to opportunity, and we are honored that eight scholars have chosen Bunker Hill as the next step toward achieving their goals,” said Eddinger.

The event highlighted the transformative power of adult education and its role in creating pathways to economic opportunity and lifelong learning.
