BHCC among six colleges launching new apprenticeship degree programs in Massachusetts
Thursday, March 12, 2026
BHCC is one of six Massachusetts community colleges helping lead a new statewide effort to launch apprenticeship degree programs that allow students to earn wages while completing their college degrees.
The initiative, recently highlighted in The Boston Globe, allows students to earn wages while completing degrees or credentials. At BHCC, students are already enrolling in these programs, which combine paid, on-the-job training with academic coursework in fields such as health, education, and other growing industries.
Apprenticeship models enable students to gain real-world experience while working toward careers in high-demand industries. According to the Massachusetts Association of Community Colleges, about 50 students are currently enrolled in the new programs across participating colleges, with more than 200 expected to enroll this fall.
The initiative is supported by more than $6 million in grants from the Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation and Accelerate the Future, which are helping community colleges build new pathways that connect students to employment while addressing workforce shortages across the Commonwealth.
