(BHCC) proudly celebrates Officer Nayalis Hernandez, the inaugural graduate of the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Scholarship Program—an initiative aimed at increasing opportunities for law enforcement careers among economically disadvantaged and underrepresented individuals across Massachusetts.
Officer Hernandez recently completed the demanding Recruit Officer Course (ROC) at the MPTC–NECC Police Academy as part of its 7th ROC class. Starting the program as a self-sponsored student and scholarship recipient, she faced the challenge of balancing training requirements without departmental pay. Her perseverance and dedication to public service paid off when she was offered a position at the BHCC Police Department, where she now works full-time.
“Officer Hernandez exemplifies the true purpose of the MPTC Scholarship Program,” said Robert Barrows, BHCC Chief of Police. “Her determination, professionalism, and dedication to serving our community symbolize the future of policing in the Commonwealth. We are proud to have her on our team.”
Hernandez attributes her success to the support of her academy leadership and mentors at BHCC. She reflected on her experience as one marked by resilience, personal growth, and strong camaraderie with her classmates.
“Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) was definitely the toughest part of the academy, but when I look back, I feel nothing but pride and gratitude,” said Officer Hernandez. "The lessons I learned, the friendships I built, and the support I received from my mentors made the entire experience unforgettable and set the foundation for a meaningful career in law enforcement.”
The MPTC Scholarship Program, which aims to strengthen the statewide law enforcement pipeline, demonstrates how targeted investment and support can open doors to careers in public safety while enriching local communities.
