In Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear BHCC Community,

As we study the inspirational achievements and ongoing struggles in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 17, 2022, I hope we take his teachings to heart and reflect on our own work, and that of our community, our nation, and our world.  

Many of us are familiar with Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. We might consider amplifying the power of this guiding vision by studying his life and work holistically, and understanding his words within a larger context of the struggle for social justice, then and now.

BHCC celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with two virtual events. On Tuesday, January 25 at 6 p.m., English Professor Tony Clark will present Contextualizing and Teaching King in 2022: From Civil Rights to Social Justice. On Wednesday, January 26 at 6 p.m., BHCC students, faculty, and staff will perform a series of speeches related to the themes of social justice and human rights with a celebration titled MLK Revisited: A Legacy of Social Justice and Human Rights. I invite all of us to honor the legacy of Dr. King by reflecting on progress and work still to be done on social and economic equity.  At Bunker Hill Community College, we reaffirm our commitment to a vibrant and safe teaching and learning environment, where diversity, equity, and inclusion are cherished.

Dr. King once said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” (The Purpose of Education, 1948)

In whatever way you may choose to celebrate Martin Luther King Day, I wish for you hope, affirmation and renewal.
