Pinning Summer Graduates of the Health Science Program

Sixty-two Health Science graduates received pins on Monday, August 7, 2017, at the Homewood Suites by Hilton in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Health Science programs provide students with the education and training they need to become healthcare providers while focusing on their needs to gain the skills required for success in the workplace, continued education and achieving long-term goals.

2017 graduates of health science programsJohn Pitcher, Vice President of Administration of Finance, opened the ceremony with welcoming remarks to the graduates, faculty, staff and guests.

Deborah Latina, Professor and Chairperson of Allied Health Certificate Programs, addressed the students, acknowledging the challenges they faced to complete their studies. We appreciate the sacrifices that you had to make to complete the program,” Latina said, “Going to school with children, spouses or work is hard.” Latina also mentioned that after being part of the program, the students have an understanding of what it is like working with a team. Being able to work collaboratively is a skill that is useful in their approaching careers.

The graduates represented Allied Health programs including Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician and Certified Nursing Assistant. Family and friends joined in the celebration of the students’ completion of their program, as each student was pinned to signify their transition from student to practitioner.

Dr. Alice Murillo, Associate Provost of Chelsea Campus, addressed the graduates, focusing on the great opportunities ahead of them and the importance of giving back to their communities. “I believe that this is just the beginning for you.” Murillo said, “As an educator, I hope that you have your eye on another opportunity, perhaps a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree.”

Viashali D. Kotak, the class speaker for the medical assistant program addressed the graduates. “I travelled from India to be in Boston. My goal is to go further in my career.” Kotak thanked her fellow students and instructors. “After my internship with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, I was offered a job.” She closed by thanking the faculty for their continuous support.

Students enjoyed light refreshments and conversations after the pinning. They shared their classroom experiences, photos with their families and hugged goodbye.
