Event to Benefit The Greater Boston Food Bank
Seventeen Boston-area design and construction firms will be participating in the 14th annual CANSTRUCTION® taking place at Bunker Hill Community College starting on Monday, October 19, 2009. This community service project combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed hungry people by donating all of the food used to build the sculptures to The Greater Boston Food Bank. Over the past 13 years, the Boston-area architecture community donated 491,500 lbs of food, the equivalent of more than 378,000 meals, to The Food Bank.
CANSTRUCTION® competing teams, led by architects and engineers, showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. The theme of this year’s event will be “EAT THE ART,” and will include King Tut’s Mask, a Sushi Boat, Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar, Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture and several of Andy Warhol’s iconic pieces. Participating firms include AECOM, Add Inc., ARC, Arrowstreet Inc., CBT, EYP Architecture, DiMella Shaffer/LA Fuess Partners, GENSLER, JV/Northeastern University, Margulies Perruzzi, Nitsch Engineering, Payette Associates, Prellwitz Chillinski, Sasaki Associates, Simpson Gumphertz & Hager, Symmes Maini & McKee, and Tro Jung/Brannen.
CANSTRUCTION® will be open to the public from Monday, October 19 through Friday, November 6, 2009 from 9:00 am – 10:00 pm. The seventeen structures will be placed throughout the Bunker Hill Community College Campus, 250 New Rutherford Ave., Boston, MA. The opening ceremony will take place on Monday, October 19th at 10:30 am and the award winners will be announced on Thursday, October 22 at 6:00 pm.
