How BHCC helped Andrew Bourguignon discover purpose, find leadership and empower his peers

When Andrew Bourguignon arrived at Bunker Hill Community College, he was seeking connection and purpose. Having faced loneliness and instability earlier in life, he found at BHCC a community that helped him realize his potential and motivated him to help others do the same.

A turning point came when Professor Signe Johns recognized his leadership abilities and encouraged him to join the Exploring Leadership program. “She helped me recognize that the potential I see in myself can fuel motivation in those around me,” Andrew said. “I’m very grateful for her encouragement.”

Through Exploring Leadership, Andrew worked with other campus leaders in workshops and group discussions about leadership and the cultural diversity that defines the BHCC community. “We all collectively created an environment of shared support,” he said. “It was such a valuable experience that “I would have taken it over and over if I could.”

Those experiences inspired him to continue mentoring others and taking on leadership roles. “The mentor and leadership experiences at BHCC give me genuine fulfillment,” he said. “They’ve strengthened my communication, accountability, and ability to take initiative without hesitation.”

Now studying Business Administration and set to graduate in 2026, Andrew credits BHCC with shaping his confidence and sense of purpose. “Everyone here has a story,” he reflected. “When we share those stories and lift each other up, that’s when real leadership begins.”
