Enrollment is rising across Massachusetts community colleges, and BHCC is leading that momentum—turning free college access into workforce readiness and stronger career pathways.
Community college enrollment is climbing. How does BHCC’s growth fit into that story?
Enrollment increased 13% this fall, fueled by strong growth among 18- to 24- year-olds and a rise in dual enrollment and Early College participation. Enrollment among students under 18 has surged 143% year over year, a trend that expands our pipeline of students and, ultimately, strengthens the state’s future workforce.
Free community college has been transformative. How has this impacted who is enrolling?
Free community college opens the door for students who might not have enrolled, making college more accessible and affordable. This year, nearly 3,000 BHCC students benefitted from MassEducate and MassReconnect, receiving more than $6.8 million in financial support towards their education.
Which programs are seeing the most demand?
Health and STEM lead with 38% and 20% of total enrollment, respectively. Health Science remains our most sought-after program, offering a direct pathway to high-demand careers such as nursing, medical imaging and allied health—key areas of workforce need across Massachusetts.
Beyond the numbers, what feels different about this year’s incoming class?
There’s a higher level of motivation and self-advocacy. Many students who previously stopped attending are now completing their degrees, and engagement is especially strong among women entering high-demand fields like healthcare, business, psychology and computer science.
