THE PULSE AND PRIDE OF THE BULLDOGS

Finding Purpose,
Then Paying it Forward

U.S. veteran and BHCC nursing graduate Donald PerryU.S. veteran and BHCC nursing graduate Donald Perry discovered a lifeline in the Veterans Center and now pays that guidance forward to others navigating higher education.

BHCC launched a storytelling initiative to gather stories from the community and share favorite or memorable moments from their college experiences. Alumnus Donald Perry shared his journey of service, resilience and mentorship. A U.S. veteran and proud nursing graduate, Donald reflects on how BHCC’s Veterans Center became both a lifeline and a foundation for his career and personal growth.

When Donald first arrived at BHCC in 2019, his life was “blown up.” Amid difficult circumstances, he found a community of staff who truly cared, especially Success Fund Director Misael Carrasquillo and Student Affairs Assistant Dean Vengerflutta Smith, who helped him find stability and purpose. The Veterans Center, he says, became “home,” providing not only academic support but also emotional and professional guidance.

Paying It Forward

Later working as a study assistant and mentor at the center, Donald helped fellow veterans navigate the complex world of educational benefits. He recalls a transformative moment when a veteran feared he couldn’t finish school because his GI Bill was about to expire. Donald introduced him to the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) program, which extended his funding—potentially all the way to a Ph.D. level. Two hours later, that veteran returned smiling and said, “You changed my life.” For Donald, that moment captures the essence of what the Veterans Center stands for: empowerment through knowledge.

A Lesson in Lifelong Investment

Donald emphasizes the idea of “human capital,” that education is an investment not just in oneself but in the community. His own path, from student nurse to aspiring Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, shows how informed support systems can turn setbacks into success stories. He believes that helping veterans understand their options prevents “costly missed opportunities”—both financially and personally.

Lasting Legacy

As Donald prepares to finish his Bachelor of Science in Nursing, he reflects with gratitude: “This is my home. I will never forget this place.” His story reminds us that education, when combined with compassion and mentorship, can transform lives and foster a cycle of giving back.
