Marine Technician Program: Introduction to Marine Engines and Systems 

BHCC is pleased to announce the Marine Technician Program, in partnership with Mass Marine Trades Association and Mercury Marine University. BHCC will provide training for marine technicians to meet the demands of the MA boating industry. Marine Technicians earn an average wage of $45,000-50,000 per year with a growth potential of 5 % across the state. The average wages for technicians have increased by approximately 30% over the last few years.

Students will receive instruction in: ABYC Fundamentals of Marine Service and Technology, both theory and repairs and Mercury Marine Basics.

  • Students will receive classroom an hands-on instruction on the basics marine service and technology in the areas of marine Shop safety and practice, Electrical systems and installation, Internal combustion theory. Drive systems, Inboard and outboard engine maintenance and troubleshooting, Marine plumbing/HVAC, Fiberglass basics and marine construction concepts, Customer service principals and more.
  • Marine technician graduates go on to pursue careers both on and off the water in trades such as; marine technician, shipyard trades,  marina/dock staff, marine construction, vessel crew, and other  maritime-related roles. Students will also receive career counseling, mentorship, tutoring, hands-on training, and job placement assistance.

The Spring 2025 Course will begin on January 21st 2025. The course runs Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights from 6-9:00pm. The course is 10-weeks long.

Tuition

Tuition is free for those who will work in the Marine Industry and those who qualify for the Good Jobs Challenge or Rapid Recovery & Reemployment (R3).

Classes are held in person at BHCC in Charlestown, teaching ABYC text and workbooks Fundamentals of Marine Service Technology and Mercury University Systems Basics.

This program is for entry-level participants with little or no experience in the field who want a job in the field and are ready to work when they complete it. Interested participants should have a High School diploma/equivalent and 1-year of mechanical experience.
