AA Liberal Arts at BHCC to BS Psychology at UMass Boston

BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THE FIRST SEMESTER, WE RECOMMEND THAT STUDENTS:

1. Attend a New Student Orientation session.
2. Meet with an advisor in LifeMap at Advising & Registration Session to review cluster and co-requisite course options, and plan their first semester schedule.
3. Plan to save all course syllabi and high school transcripts.
4. Consider Mass Transfer, Commonwealth Commitment, Boston Bridge, or Tuition-Free Community College and talk to their advisor about it.

NOTE: This pathway is not currently part of Commonwealth Commitment or Mass Transfer A2B Pathways.

• View the courses to see what courses offered at BHCC can fulfill the General Education requirements
• Only 4 Psychology courses will transfer into the BA Psychology Program at UMass-Boston
• A "C-" grade is needed for courses to transfer directly into UMass-Boston, and maximum 70 total community college credits will transfer.
• To graduate with BA from UMB, students must satisfy the Elementary Language Proficiency, take the Intermediate Seminar course, and pass the Writing Proficiency Requirement.
• BA students can meet the Elementary Language Proficiency by:
  1. Completing or transferring in a college foreign language course at the 102 level or higher. If a student completes or transfers in two semesters of the same language (such as 101 and 102), the student will also meet the two-course WC/WL requirement
  2. Completing up to level three of the same foreign language in high school.
  3. Completing at least one year of secondary or post-secondary education in a non-English-speaking school or university.
  4. Scoring three or higher on an AP exam in a foreign language, or scoring 50 or higher on a CLEP exam in a foreign language.
  5. Demonstrating proficiency to the appropriate language department or, if the language is not taught at UMass Boston, to the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Please note: Taking a language course out of sequence will result in the loss of the proficiency requirement and the loss of transfer credits. For further information about the requirement, please consult with staff at the Office of Undergraduate Studies.

AFTER COMPLETING 15 COLLEGE-LEVEL CREDITS, WE RECOMMEND THAT STUDENTS:

1. Continue meeting with an advisor in LifeMap for semesterly Ed Planning sessions.
2. Attend a Transfer Workshop and meet Transfer Counselors.
3. Begin meeting with Career Advisors to explore interests.
4. Create a Transferology account and enter at least one course, to view UMB degree audit and determine how current & future courses transfer

• UMass-Boston Psychology Chairs and Faculty recommend BHCC students take BIO-195 (=BIOL 111 at UMass-Boston) because it provides a foundation for higher-level Psych courses, like Psych-360.
• They also recommend that BHCC students take MAT-194 (=MATH 115 at UMass-Boston).
• UMB’s Psychology Department requires students to take intermediate level courses in each of five areas of psychology. Students complete the intermediate level course work by taking one course in each of these five areas.  These courses provide students with more in depth information about each of the main areas in which psychologists work.  Each area has either one or two specific courses. There are no requirements regarding the order in which these courses are taken. These areas include:
• Personality/Clinical
• Developmental
• Social
• Cognitive
• Psychobiological

AFTER COMPLETING 30 COLLEGE LEVEL CREDITS, WE RECOMMEND THAT STUDENTS:

1. Continue meeting with an advisor in LifeMap for semesterly Educational Planning sessions.
2. Continue meeting with Transfer Counselors & Career Advisors.
3. Attend a UMass-Boston Transfer Day Event at BHCC or UMB, to have your application fee, essay requirement, and recommendations waived.

• BHCC students should run a Transferology degree audit each semester to see how their courses align with UMass-Boston BA Psychology degree requirements.

AFTER COMPLETING 45 COLLEGE LEVEL CREDITS, WE RECOMMEND THAT STUDENTS:

1. Apply for graduation at the START of their FINAL semester at BHCC.
2. Apply to UMB using the UMass-Boston Web Application.
3. Send official transcripts to UMB ASAP
4. Check the myUMB portal to see what additional materials are needed to complete your application.
5. Complete FAFSA, and add UMB’s code to it (002222).

• MAT-181 (=MATH125 at UMass-Boston) waives the Quantitative Reasoning Requirement at UMass-Boston, which is recommended by advisors.

• You will be waived from the quantitative reasoning requirement and you will receive math distribution credit for: MATH 125 (MAT-181 at BHCC), SOCIOL 350 (No BHCC equivalency), PSYCH 270 (No BHCC equivalency), ECON 205 (No BHCC equivalency), EEOS 261 (No BHCC equivalency)

AFTER COMPLETING 75 COLLEGE LEVEL CREDITS, WE RECOMMEND THAT STUDENTS:

1. Complete the Writing Proficiency Requirement (WPE or E-WRAP) at 75 credits.
2. Meet w/ CLA Advisor and Faculty Advisor to plan courses and consider a minor, second major, and/or study abroad.
3. Consider meeting with the Career Center.
4. Consider participating in a 4+1 program.
