Statement on Racism as a Public Health Crisis

In June 2020, the Mayor of Boston declared racism as a public health crisis and began implementing strategies to mitigate its damaging effects. Shortly after, the cities of Somerville, Revere, Everett, and Chelsea joined this declaration. In September, amid growing evidence, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey, and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley challenged the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to acknowledge the role of racism in precipitating the current deep public health crisis.

Bunker Hill Community College Designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution with $2.9M Grant

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) has received a $2.9M grant from the United States Department of Education’s Title V: Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) program and is now designated as a HSI. The grant was created to assist institutions to expand education opportunities for Hispanic students by expanding and enhancing academic offerings, program quality and institutional stability. The funds, awarded over five years, will impact the College’s self-sufficiency and capacity to improve outcomes for its large and growing population of Hispanic/Latinx and low-income students.

Bunker Hill Community College Chief of Police Robert Barrows shared his personal experiences with the criminal justice system and the lessons he learned as a young person moving into a career in law enforcement. The virtual presentation, entitled “An Oh-So Ordinary Tale with an Extraordinary Ending,” was part of the new monthly Intentional Critical Conversations series sponsored by Cape Cod Community College. The series focuses on changing narratives throughout the 21st century and elevates stories about serving, protecting, and community.
