Experience U.S. Culture in Boston through the Study Tours Program or through our Au Pair Weekend Program!

The  Study Tours Program

The Communities of Intercultural Learning (CoIL Boston) Study Tours program offers student groups a unique opportunity to experience U.S. culture in Boston, Massachusetts, one of the world’s most intellectually stimulating cities. Students will take seminars with professors from Bunker Hill Community College -- the largest community college in Massachusetts and one of the most diverse in on the East Coast!  Students also will experience first-hand the American way of life by living with homestay host families and making personal discoveries through sightseeing excursions and other college-led activities.

CoIL Boston Philosophy

At its heart, CoIL Boston allows participants to learn, have fun and make discoveries about themselves and the environment they are part of during their short-term stay. The program encourages students to be active learners – in and outside of the classroom – to personally grow from the encounters with the new culture they find themselves in.

Academic Experience

We will work with your school’s administrator or international education officer to determine the learning outcomes you want your students to achieve for each seminar.  Each session lasts up to three hours in duration with built-in breaks.  To the extent possible, we incorporate the following highly-valued 21st century workplace skills in our seminars: team collaboration, critical thinking, and innovative thinking skills. Should your program include intercultural communication as a seminar topic, your students will learn skills that will enhance their cross-cultural understanding in a world where the growth of global business, technology, and the internet demands a workforce that understands how people from different cultures speak, communicate, and perceive the world around them.

Our seminars consist of lectures interspersed with classroom activities where students collaborate to work through assignment problems. Depending on the length of the program, faculty may assign homework to reinforce classroom learning.

Homestay Experience

The academic tuition does not include homestay. Our college partners with a local, privately-owned and trusted homestay company. They arrange safe, comfortable, home-based accommodation that gives visitors the opportunity to interact with American individuals and families. Their multilingual experienced team of specialists offer quality services for visitors to Boston. We will put you in touch with the president of the homestay company so that you may discuss the homestay options and their costs.

Program Details

Ideal CoIL Boston participants include high school students (junior and senior level), university students, and education travel groups.  All seminars are conducted at Bunker Hill Community College, which is located in historic Charlestown and a few station T stops from downtown Boston.  Originally a Puritan city during the colonial era and founded in 1628, Charlestown is a nice neighborhood made up of middle-class, upper-middle class, housing projects and a large working class Irish-American demographic. Seminars in the morning are generally followed by lunch and afternoon excursions in the city.

CoIL Boston can be experienced in one, two, three, four, or more weeks. Students follow a prescribed, well-planned itinerary. If your program agenda includes sightseeing trips, our BHCC students will chaperone your students to their trip destination. This allows your students to interact with our students in an informal setting. At the conclusion of academic day at the college, students have free time to engage in the life of college such as participate in a student club, work out at the Fitness Center, sightsee in the city, shop, or return to their host families. Each participant will receive a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the study tour.
