Stand out to employers by earning a Skill Badge at Bunker Hill! This NEW program highlights the in-demand workplace skills you're already building at BHCC while completing your degree. Gain recognition for the skills you learn in courses and co-curricular programs and learn how to present them confidently for career success!

What is a Skill Badge?

A Skill Badge is a record of a learning achievement that can be completed in a short period of time. They are awarded by verified providers who assess the learner’s skills based on defined standards.

Skill Badges at Bunker Hill are granted to students who complete a series 
of courses with a C grade or higher and participate in a workshop or who complete certain co-curricular activities. 

How to Earn a Skill Badge

  1. Academic Skill Badge: Successfully complete 3 courses (passing with a C grade or higher) designated as a Skill Badge track and attend a workplace simulation scenario workshop
  2. Co-curricular Skill Badge: Successfully complete training and activities that practically apply the skill learned in training for a co-curricular program

Inclusive Communication Practices

Inclusive Communication Practices Skill BadgeDescription: The Inclusive Communication Practices Skill Badge validates students’ ability to be effective communicators in diverse workplace settings. By analyzing social categories such as race, gender, class, sexuality, and ability, students learn to tailor messages and communication styles for a variety of audience types. Students gain experience and apply knowledge in communication theory, interpersonal dialogue, and presentation skills.

  • COM-110: Intro to Communication
  • COM-171: Public Speaking and Professional Communication

Interpersonal Intelligence and Conflict Management skill badgeThis Skill Badge validates students’ ability to manage conflict and communicate effectively with diverse clients or personnel in professional settings. Badge earners demonstrate self-awareness and an understanding of personal, social, and psychological factors influencing interpersonal relationships. They use active listening and problem-solving skills to de-escalate conflict, foster collaboration, follow workplace procedures, and respond professionally to feedback.

Performance and Self-Promotion skill badgeThe Performance and Self-Promotion skill badge highlights students’ ability to showcase their music skills in the contemporary music industry. Students gain experience as a musician while engaging with music technology as a means to create and share their artistic projects. By learning about the various sectors and roles of the music industry, students learn how these projects can be leveraged in service of careers in the music business.

Team Dynamics and Adaptability skill badgeThis Skill Badge affirms students’ ability to produce creative content as a member of a diverse team. By understanding their own specific artistic or production role and the roles of their collaborators, students are able to leverage their strengths in service of a creative goal. Students gain valuable experience in delivering and applying feedback, inclusive communication, and problem solving.

Writing and Editing for Publication skill badgeThis Skill Badge recognizes skills in editing, revising, and preparing writing for publication. Students demonstrate the ability to adapt work for audience and purpose, provide and apply editorial feedback, and understand the publishing process across platforms. The badge acknowledges that AI tools may be present in editing and publishing, but validates students’ ability to perform these skills independently and discern when AI support is appropriate.

Writing and Research in the Age of AI skill badgeThis Skill Badge demonstrates the ability to generate research questions, locate and evaluate academic sources (including with AI tools), and synthesize research in writing. Badge earners show fluency with traditional and emerging research methods, showing readiness for upper-level coursework and research-based careers. Students who earn this badge have experience in formulating clear, focused research questions, using academic databases and digital research tools, evaluating credibility and bias in sources (including AI-generated content), and ethically integrating AI tools in the research process.

They apply critical thinking to assess credibility, draw evidence-based conclusions, and communicate findings through research papers, presentations, or visual graphics.

ACE Mentor

ACE Mentor Skill BadgeThe ACE Mentors Skill Badge validates students’ skills in mental health support, educational coaching, and career guidance for boosting academic achievement, engagement, and cultural competency among their peers. Mentors use this training to offer in-class support, helping students access campus services and make the most of academic and career planning resources. Participants will also explore equity, cultural wealth, and gain insights on feedback and reflection.

Activities required:

  • 11 hours of ACE Mentor training completed in one semester
  • 1 semester as an ACE Mentor in a first-year course

Community Connect Peer Connectors

Community Connect Peer Connectors skill badgeThe Community Connect Peer Connector Skill Badge validates skills in outreach, referrals, warm handoffs, and professional peer support, with the aim of eliminating barriers to success and uplifting the strengths of their student peers. Peer Connectors assist students in navigating institutional processes, connecting to resources, and building self-advocacy. Through hands-on practice, they develop communication, documentation, and coordination skills transferable to professional workplace setting

  • Attend and complete required onboarding and ongoing training modules (approximately 8 hours within one academic semester)
  • Work a minimum of 5 hours per week for one academic semester as a Community Connect Peer Connector

Multilingual Ambassadors

The Multilingual Ambassadors  skill badgeThe Multilingual Ambassadors Skill Badge certifies the professional, linguistic, and leadership skills developed by student Ambassadors, including language access, interpretation, intercultural communication, peer mentorship, and event facilitation. Ambassadors apply their multilingual fluency, lived experience, and Rosetta Languages Interpretation Training to expand access to information, services, and opportunities for immigrant and ELL students across campus.

  • Successfully complete the Rosetta Language Interpretation 8-Week Training and all required Ambassador training.
  • Serve as a Multilingual Ambassador for two academic semesters within one academic year, working 12.5 hours per week.

Student Engagement Leaders

Student Engagement Leaders skill badgeThe Student Engagement Leaders Skill Badge validates a student’s skills in cultural competency, emotional intelligence, and peer communication developed through supporting new and returning students. As role models and ambassadors, SELs provide responsive, service-oriented support by helping peers navigate campus, connect with resources, and feel welcomed at BHCC. Training in resource navigation, time management, and reflective practice enables effective, high-impact peer support.

  • Completion of 12 hours of specialized SEL Training across two (2) academic semesters.
  • Successful performance for two (2) semesters as a Student Engagement Leader in the Office of Student Leadership & Engagement (SLE).

Each Credly badge holds information about the Skills Badge(s) you earned, so employers can see the courses/ activities and learning outcomes associated with each Skill Badge.

The Skill Badge program is an initiative of the Humanities to Career (H2C) Program at BHCC. H2C seeks to redesign the College’s Humanities and Liberal Arts (HLA) programs in ways that enhance and expand career preparation for HLA students.
