BHCC Early College goes to UMass Boston
Thursday, October 10, 2019
On October 8, 2019, the Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) Early College (EC) program collaborated with University of Massachusetts (UMass) Boston’s Mauricio Gastón Institute for Latino Community Development and Public Policy to facilitate a campus visit for EC students at UMass Boston.
The valuable college readiness experience centered in inclusivity, cultural wealth, student support and engagement allowed students to participate in the annual Mi Casa Es Su Casa event, hosted by UMass Boston Casa Latinx student leaders with support from the Mauricio Gastón Institute during Hispanic Heritage Month 2019.
EC students took part in a passport to success activity, speaking with campus staff and learning about UMass Boston resources while broadening their horizons to support systems, involvement opportunities, plans of study, scholarship and financial aid resources in a social, welcoming and informal setting with UMass Boston staff, faculty, and students present.
The students also had a financial aid awareness session with Q&A where many students actively engaged the UMass Boston undergraduate and graduate student panelists. After the event, EC students remarked that they learned a lot more about UMass Boston and the college experience, such as study abroad, career services, counseling, scholarship and leadership opportunities to maximize their experience, develop personally and thrive as college students.
This collaboration is conceptualized and coordinated by Ankur Kumar, Daniela Bravo-Terkia, Dr. Fabián Torres-Ardila, Dr. Lorna Rivera, and Henry Chavez. As a result of the mutual interest and positive feedback, plans are underway for a second collaborative program between BHCC EC and UMass Boston during Spring 2020.
