Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Course
Get the training you need to become an EMT! Emergency Medical Technicians play a critical role in providing emergency care to victims of accidents and other illnesses before victims are transported to a hospital.
The EMT course at Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC), EMT-Basic, is a 180-hour, seven-credit course. It is designed for those seeking a career in Emergency Medical Services and will prepare students to function in the field as competent basic care providers.
The curriculum follows the national standard EMT-Basic Curriculum, and meets and/or exceeds the requirements set forth by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Office of Emergency Medical Services.
Career Pathways
EMTs play an important role in emergency care. Many successful healthcare professionals start out as EMTs. How to Register
To register for the seven-credit Emergency Medical Technician course, EMT-103. To register, follow the following steps:

- Visit Student Central, Located in room B202 of our Charlestown Campus, to register. Bring with you:
- A completed Massachusetts In-State Tuition Eligibility Form(if you are claiming entitlement to in-state tuition rates).
- A government issued photo ID.

The Massachusetts and National Registry EMT Certification Examinations
Upon successful completion of the EMT-Basic course, students will receive a certificate with seven earned credits and will be eligible to take the Massachusetts/National Registry EMT Certification Examination. In order to be certified as an EMT at the Basic level in Massachusetts, students must pass the state examination.
The exam, which is both written and skills-based, requires that test-takers must be:
- Able to read, understand and communicate in English
- At least 18 years old
- Free of addiction to alcohol or drugs
- Free from any physical or mental defect or disease which might impair their ability to provide emergency care within the scope of EMT training and responsibilities, or which might jeopardize the health of another member of the course
- Able to complete the EMT course with a perfect attendance record

BHCC Emergency Medical Technician Course Information

The EMT course at Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC), EMT-Basic, is a 180-hour, seven-credit course. It is designed for those seeking a career in Emergency Medical Services and will prepare students to function in the field as competent basic care providers. Becoming an EMT first is also a prerequisite to becoming a Paramedic.
The curriculum follows the national standard EMT-Basic Curriculum and meets and/or exceeds the requirements set forth by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Office of Emergency Medical Services. Students also obtain AHA BLS CPR certification as part of the course.
Upon successfully completing the EMT-Basic course, students will receive a certificate with seven earned credits and may earn an endorsement to take the Massachusetts/National Registry EMT Certification Examination. In order to become a licensed EMT at the Basic level in Massachusetts, students must pass the registration exams upon completion of the course. There are both a written and skills-based exam that test-takers must be:
- Able to read, understand and communicate in English.
- At least 18 years old
- Free of addiction to alcohol or drugs
- Free from any physical or mental defect or disease which might impair their ability to provide emergency care within the scope of EMT training and responsibilities, or which might jeopardize the health of another member of the course.
- Able to complete the EMT course with a perfect attendance record.
- CORI is required.
Schedule/Format
This course will be an online hybrid course that involves asynchronous didactic learning combined with in-class hands-on laboratory sections that will meet either weekly ( DAY AND NIGHT options) or bi-weekly on Saturdays.
